Review from Boomkat.com
The most recent set of recordings from Sebastien Wright's August Stars project, Midwinter - as its title suggests - communicates via an icy auditory language. Opener 'Nor-Easter' is of Thomas Koner proportions in its conjuring of auditory permafrost, setting the scene quite beautifully from the get-go. The ensuing pieces, 'Winter Skies' and 'Valse En Glace' are a little more sonorous, evoking an electronic bell sound to instil that 'cold day in Narnia' vibe. This simple yet massively atmospheric sound set is the dominant driving force behind much of the album, a pattern only broken by the time 'Inland Rainfall' is reached, when field recordings of watery motion and sinister woodland goings on grab your attention. Marking another change in tone, 'December Twilight' rounds off the album with a twenty-two minute dark ambient soundscape. All very beautiful, but Midwinter carries oddly unsettling undertones too. Recommended.

Ballard, Sébastien's series of long-form EPs explored a rich seam of dark ambient music long before their current vogue. ... more
